Verses of Punjab is a project to highlight classic Punjabi songs with interactive lyrics and translations. This is largely born out of a growing interest and admiration for Punjabi folk music, as well wanting to improve my Punjabi.
Lyrics and translations for older songs are not readily available so I figured it’d be a fun and rewarding project to transcribe and translate them. This website is a place for sharing that — I hope you’ll find something interesting here.
Lyrics are transcribed to Gurmukhi by ear unless they are already available online. I’ve only transcribed these songs using Gurmukhi due to my (basic) familiarity with the script — I unfortunately have zero knowledge of Shahmukhi. Tools from Punjabi University like Punjabipedia and the Punjabi-English Dictionary have been invaluable for translations. I’ve also had a lot of help from more proficient Punjabi speakers in my family. Romanization is done using GPT-4.
Given the scrappy nature of putting together these lyrics and translations, mistakes may come up. If you find errors in the lyrics, translations, transliterations, or song details, your feedback is appreciated! You can contact me below or submit corrections directly via the song page.
